Barkuhi was the first British coal mine town in Asia. Barkuhi is a small town in the Tehsil of Parasia, District Chhindwara. Distance from Bhopal is 250 km. The Barkuhi parish was entrusted to the CMI care on April 30, 2006 by the Archdiocese of Nagpur. At present there are around 150 Catholic faithful. Since then the CMI Fathers have been taking care of the spiritual and pastoral needs of the people around. There are regular Sunday Holy Masses and other devotional activities in the parish. The church in Barkuhi had a humble beginning in 1963 with only four families and few Italian nuns of the Charity Sisters of Bambina who had come here to run the WCL central hospital. The Holy Angel's Convent Chapel was used also for Sunday and feast day public Holy Masses, till 1994, until the new church of Our Lady of Lourdes was built. The first CMI Priest of Barkuhi Parish was Fr. Antony Chiramel (August 2003 to July 2008 ) and he used to stay in the small presbytery adjacent to the church.
