The 36th General Synaxis of the CMI Congregation stressed the need for taking up Global Mission in the lesser developed parts of the world. In response to that, the then Provincial Synaxis resolved to conduct a feasibility study and it was found feasible to start a mission in Africa. Thus, the department of Evangelization and Pastoral Ministry conducted a feasibility study in the Diocese of Kasana-Luweero, Uganda. It was Fr. Pauly Thekkan, the then Provincial Coordinator in USA, who through his Priest friends, has contacted Rt. Rev. Dr. Paul Ssemogerere, the Bishop of Kasana-Luweero and initiated the process of CMI presence in Uganda. He has contributed immensely in the planning as well as in the development of the CMI Ugandan Mission. Thus, at the invitation of Rt. Rev. Dr. Paul Ssemogerere, the Bishop of the Diocese, Fr. Paulson Muthipeedika the Councillor for Evangelization and Pastoral Ministry along with Fr. Davis Mekkattukulam from South Africa visited the Diocese of Kasana-Luweero in Uganda in May 2018. They submitted a report to the Provincial Council and after considering the view of the members of the Province during the Province Meet in May 2018, the Provincial Council decided to take up a Mission in Uganda. Thus, our interest in starting a mission in Kasana-Luweero Diocese was communicated to the Bishop. At his invitation Fr. Justin Akkara, the Provincial and Fr. Saju Kollannoor the prospective missionary in Uganda, visited the Diocese in March- April 2019, met the Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Paul Ssemogerere, the Priests and the proposed Sub-Parish Kanyanda.
An agreement was signed between the Diocese and the Province on July 23, 2019. Fr. Saju Kollannoor and Fr. Stenin Puthuran, the pioneering CMI missionaries of Uganda reached the Diocese of Kasana-Luweero, accompanied by Fr. Joby Pulikkan, the Councillor for Education. For a few months they stayed at the headquarters of the Diocese at Kasana before moving to Kijaguzo Parish presbytery to which the Kanyanda sub parish belongs. The foundation stone of the CMI Residence (presbytery) was laid on December 27, 2019.The first CMI house in Uganda -‘Carmelites House- reminds us of the magnanimity of Fr. Pauly Thekkan and his friends in the USA and they continue to be the main resource mobilizers for this mission in manifold ways. Even though our Fathers had shifted to the new house -‘Carmelites House, Kanyanda’- on August 22, 2020, it was inaugurated and blessed by Fr. Sebi Edattukaran CMI, the Vicar Provincial, in the gracious presence of Rt. Rev. Dr. Paul Ssemogerere, the Bishop of Kasana-Luweero Diocese on February 21, 20021.
